Many U.S. Soldiers in Iraq do not get to experience the joy and excitement of hearing their name called during mail delivery.

While all Americans hope for the safe return of U.S. soldiers, there are a great deal of soldiers that do not have the support of friends and family in the form of letters, cards, and care packages.

Getting Involved

There are several ways that you could go about helping support those soldiers that are missing out.

If you have a soldier in your life that is serving in Iraq, you could ask him or her to provide you with the names of any soldiers that they know of that do not receive a lot of mail and packages.

Once you have some names, you could rally your friends and family to start sending letters, cards, and care packages to those soldiers.

Another option would be to find a service that will help you "adopt" a soldier, such as Soldiers' Angels.

About Soldiers' Angels

Soldiers' Angels is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 by the mother of two U.S. Soldiers. Their slogan is "May No Soldier Go Unloved".

The organization has over 200,000 volunteer members in over twenty different teams and programs, that include:

  • Adopt a Soldier
  • Guardian Angels for Soldiers' Pets
  • Holidays for Heroes
  • Blankets of Hope

In order to adopt a soldier through this program, you are required to fill out a pre-screening application. You also need to be able to commit to sending one card or letter each week, and a minimum of one to two care packages each month.

The Adopt a Soldier program is an excellent and inexpensive way to show your support for U.S. Troops. The care packages do not have to be expensive. A list will be provided by the Adopt a Soldier service of the most requested items.

Soldiers' Angels also offers pre-made care packages available at their online store. They ship directly from the Angel Store to the soldier, and will include a personal message from you. These are sold at cost.

Submitting Soldiers' Names to Agencies

If you do know of any soldiers that do not receive mail on a regular basis, you could submit their name to an "adoption" agency (with their permission, of course).

Alternative Ways to Help

If you cannot help by adopting a soldier; but, would still like to help, there are other ways. For instance:

  • Make a monetary donation to an organization that helps to provide aid and comfort to the troops.
  • Donate items, such as blankets, to an organization that ships these items to the soldiers in Iraq.
  • Send baked goods to your loved ones that are deployed, and ask them to share them with the other soldiers. Include a personal note to let them know how much you appreciate their dedication and service.
  • Send extra care packages to a family member that is serving in Iraq, and ask them to give them to other soldiers that do not receive a lot from people in the States.

With a lot of thought, a lot of caring, and very little effort, there are many ways to show support for the U.S. Soldiers serving in Iraq. They truly deserve it!

Christine Welter :
Thanks for this article. I have been sending packages and letters to soldiers whose address I received from the following website: http://anysoldier.com/ website
They are so grateful. On this site they often ask for specific items.
Here is a quote from someone who wrote back to me:

"Thank you very much for the wonderful package. I was so happy to receive it and when I opened it, I was even more overwhelmed with happiness. I cannot express how much it means to me:) The effort and the time that you spent in putting it together is greatly appreciated. I loved everything that was in it. It brought me back home to the states. The picture of the sunflowers is on my wall locker. It is so beautiful. There is nothing but dust and sand here, little vegetation and so when I wake up it the morning it helps to see such a wonderful, beautiful picture. If possible could you send me more of your photos. I have a small piece of corkboard all to myself in our office and I would like to decorate it with your photos of nature."
